چکیده

Robert Staruch is a Military Foundation Year 2 Doctor, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham; Steven Jeffery is a Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon, Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. This paper was originally submitted in October, 2010 The role of topical negative pressure (TNP) in the closure of acute wounds has become a new and dynamic area of research in medicine. Clinicians have to date been using continuous or intermittently applied therapy, with little scientific evidence to demonstrate the difference between them. Variable TNP combines the positive effects of continuous and intermittent to produce an optimal environment of sub-atmospheric pressure to a wound bed. Through experience with a new device, the Atmos pump, this paper demonstrates the advantages of this new technique.

Advances in wound healing: topical negative pressure therapy.

In clinical practice many wounds are slow to heal and difficult to manage. The recently introduced technique of topical negative pressure therapy (TNP) has been developed to try to overcome some of these difficulties. TNP applies a controlled negative pressure to the surface of a wound that has potential advantages for wound treatment and management. Although the concept itself, of using suctio...

Individualizing the use of negative pressure wound therapy for optimal wound healing: a focused review of the literature.

Currently available research suggests that negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) creates a moist wound healing environment, drains exudate, reduces tissue edema, contracts the wound edges, mechanically stimulates the wound bed, and influences blood perfusion at the wound edge, which may lead to angiogenesis and the formation of granulation tissue. Although no clear evidence is available th...

Use of Multiple Adjunctive Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Modalities to Manage Diabetic Lower-Extremity Wounds

Objective: Various treatment options exist for wound healing; however, clinical assessment of the patient and the wound environment must be considered before determining an optimal wound treatment plan. Negative pressure wound therapy alone and/or with an instilled topical solution can be effective in adjunctive management of acute and chronic wounds. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has also been sho...
